Newtown Sessions

EX COPS

Back in 2011, Ex Cops came into the studio to do a Session. Now that they are without *potential* McDonalds social media coverage or even a free Big Mac, we thought we would help the cause with a featured spot on the Newtown site. We’re not at 50M facebook likes, but it’s about quality not quantity.

The Scottish virtuoso Oliver Sabin a.k.a. Unicorn Kid visited Newtown Radio this fall for a rare in-studio session. He has been making radical rave pop music since way back in 2006 by pulling sound clips from old game consoles. Watch as he performs “True Love Fantasy” from his excellent Tidal Rave EP on Ultra Records, along with two new songs, “Hydrate” and “Need U” from his upcoming debut LP, scheduled to drop in Spring 2013. Be sure also to check out the link to the interview of Unicorn Kid by Pictureplane and Dom at the end of the video.

MAC DEMARCO

Mac DeMarco is the lo-fi luminary known for his sleazy pop sounds and off the wall videos. 2012 was a milestone for Mac, dropping the excellent EP, “Rock and Roll Nightclub,”and later in 2012 his first LP, “Mac DeMarco 2.” Here he is performing at CMJ for a Newtown Radio Session. Enjoy!

MEADOWLANDS

Meadowlands is the project of Michael McGregor (aka Chocolate Bobka, Free Spirit, and Vanilla Bobka). Meadowlands is his latest project, springing from a deep understanding of music combined with natural sounds – he composes an oddly beautiful landscape – using layers of tape, loops, beats & delays. Watch as he unpacks sounds of infinity.

PUNKS ON MARS

Punks on Mars is the project of Ryan Howe on Zoo Records. Having composed songs under various names, Howe put together a full band for this Newtown Radio Session. Here are two songs, “Showers of Pain” and “Glitter on Mars” from a performance that displays Howe’s lyrical charm and elegant pop sound.

NIGHT MANAGER

Night Manager, the Brooklyn innovators of lo-fi fuzzy surf pop, revel in a myriad of subtle textures. It’s a wall of sound, punctuated by Caitlyn Seager’s dazzling oo’s and ahh’s, shifting the parts in over-lapping unison. Originally the project of Ezana Edwards, the band has since disbanded, leaving behind a collection of recordings and a reputation for incredible live performance. We were fortunate to have Night Manager lay down some tracks for us in a Newtown Session and the result is one of the most interesting sessions to date.

DIIV

Dream Pop outfit DIIV (formerly DIVE) is the new project of Beach Fossils guitarist Zachary Cole Smith. In the past several months DIIV has stormed the scene and stolen the spotlight. We were fortunate to have DIIV visit Newtown Radio and lay down one of the most memorable sessions to date here performing “Sometime” “Wait” and “Doused” off their upcoming LP “Oshin” on Captured Tracks.

BLACK MARBLE

Black Marble creates lush atmospheric melodies over dark driving beats. In the spirit of French Cold Wave Black Marble’s Chris Stewart and Ty Kube have discovered a way of making music that recalls the changing landscape of electronic music in the late ’70s in Paris but with contemporary flair. For this session Black Marble plays two song, “Pretender” and “Balancing” off their recent EP on Hardly Art 2012 entitled “Weight Against the Door.”

MIRROR MIRROR

Mirror Mirror took us entirely by surprise when the drummer Joe showed
up to the studio in running shorts unaware that he was being
videotaped… It’s cool, Mirror Mirror delivered one of the most
mesmerizing Newtown Sessions to date. Following the release of their
highly acclaimed EP “Interiors” on RVNG 2011, we hear Mirror Mirror perform
the excellent “Interiors” followed by a dynamite new song, “Untitled.”

TWERPS

Twerps is a band from Melbourne Australia who make jangly refreshingly-polished gems, complete with strings and guitars, without sounding overly tight. Their self titled debut on Underwater Peoples/Chapter Music has made waves across Australia and the globe. We were fortunate to have them lay down some tracks in a Newtown Session while they were touring with Real Estate, including their hit single “Dreamin” shown above.

CHELSEA WOLFE

Chelsea Wolfe writes what music insiders call “Doom Folk” or “Dark Folk.” A native Californian who has been exposed to the Bay Area and Los Angeles music scenes in the last few years, Chelsea Wolfe has been described as an oasis in the new music scene, an apt metaphor for the musical genre she finds herself in. Part light part shadow she creates beautiful musical melodies tinged in sadness. Here is one song we are particularly fond of, “Feral Love” which Chelsea performed live during CMJ 2011 at Newtown Radio.

WIDOWSPEAK

Widowspeak is a Brooklyn band definitely on the up and up after their break out debut on Captured Tracks in 2011. In this session Widowspeak plays “Half Awake” a track off their self-titled debut, which immediately recalls the wistfulness of Mazzy Star and early Cat Power. The song’s driving rhythm is punctuated by flashes of guitar solos, Molly Hamilton’s seductive voice, and patterned drums. It is a refreshingly cool sound with a timeless quality, precisely washed out in a dream-like ecstasy, perfectly in sync with its various parts. We invite you to check out the session w/ Widowspeak, again and again…
